Burlington, inspired by Roja Parfums Burlington 1819 (2020)

Grapefruit is the backbone of Burlington 1819, tart and slightly bitter, sharpened by lime and bitter orange and lifted by a cool trace of mint. Roja lists no heart notes, and the citrus slides straight into a spiced base of ginger, cinnamon, saffron and a little cumin. Blond tobacco and cedar give it a dry, toasted quality, and vanilla adds depth rather than sugar. Oakmoss, labdanum and ambergris round off what Roja calls a fresh 'ambrée' accord.

About the original

Roja Dove created Burlington 1819 in 2020 to mark five years of the Roja boutique in London's Burlington Arcade, which opened in 1819 and gives the scent its name. It is sold as a 100 ml Eau de Parfum. A Harry Potter limited edition of Burlington 1819 came later; our model is the standard edition.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Roja Parfums stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Citrus lovers who usually find colognes too plain are the natural audience. One review placed it in warm weather, and the grapefruit keeps it fresh even as the spice comes through. Cumin and tobacco lend the base a slightly savoury, grown-up edge that may surprise anyone expecting pure citrus.

What is the 1819 in the name?

It is the year London's Burlington Arcade opened. Roja's flagship boutique is there, and the scent was made for the boutique's fifth anniversary.

Is Burlington 1819 sweet?

Not especially. Vanilla and benzoin sit in the base, but they add depth to the grapefruit and spice rather than making it sugary.
