Do Son, inspired by Diptyque Do Son (2005)

Tuberose sits at the centre of Do Son, but the marine accord keeps it from turning thick or narcotic. Orange blossom adds a clean, faintly honeyed lift, and jasmine fills out the floral middle. The salt-air note stays in the background, so the effect is of flowers carried on a sea breeze rather than an aquatic scent. As it settles, the white flowers take on a gentle musky quality.

About the original

Do Son was released by Diptyque in 2005 as an eau de toilette and is usually credited to Fabrice Pellegrin. The name comes from Do Son, a seaside town in Vietnam where Diptyque co-founder Yves Coueslant spent his childhood summers. An eau de parfum version followed later and is sold alongside the original. This page refers to the 2005 eau de toilette.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Diptyque stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lovers of white flowers who find classic tuberose perfumes too heavy may get on well with it. Diptyque positions it as unisex, and the saline edge makes it read less traditionally feminine than many tuberose scents. Tuberose still dominates, though, so a buyer who dislikes heady, indolic flowers may find it too floral.

Orange blossom and the marine accord meet in the opening, so the first minutes feel fresh and faintly salty.

Tuberose then moves forward with jasmine beside it, giving the heart a rounded, milky-floral body without sugar.

In the drydown, tuberose and orange blossom stay close together and fade into a clean, musky white-floral finish.

Is this based on the Do Son eau de toilette or the eau de parfum?

Our reference is the original 2005 Do Son Eau de Toilette; Diptyque also sells a later eau de parfum under the same name. Whichever you compare it with, our own bottle is an eau de parfum.

Does Do Son smell of the sea?

Only lightly. The marine accord adds a breezy, salty edge, while tuberose, orange blossom and jasmine do most of the work.
