Hibiscus Mahajad, inspired by Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajád (2021)

Hibiscus Mahajad opens tangy and red, the way a cup of hibiscus tea tastes before any sugar goes in, with blackcurrant adding a darker, berry-skin note. Damask rose sits right underneath and gives the fruit a floral body. Spearmint and cinnamon arrive together, an unusual pairing that stops the rose from turning jammy. Later the mood shifts towards vanilla, benzoin (a resin with a sweet, almost caramel smell) and supple leather, so the finish ends up darker and sweeter than the start.

About the original

Maison Crivelli, the Paris house founded by Thibaud Crivelli, released Hibiscus Mahajád in 2021. Quentin Bisch composed it with Crivelli, and the brand's story ties it to a hibiscus tea tasted in a precious-stone market. The house sells it as an extrait de parfum of around 32% and calls it flamboyant. A scented candle of the same name also exists; this page refers to the wearable perfume, which remains in the Maison Crivelli range.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Maison Crivelli stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its divisive streak is worth knowing about: the sweetness grows as it dries down, and the mint-and-cinnamon accent is not to every taste. Wearers who enjoy rose with fruit and spice will find plenty here. It tends to be suggested for evenings and special occasions rather than daily wear.

Hibiscus and blackcurrant lead, tart and slightly sour, while spearmint gives the top a cool green edge.

Damask rose and ambrette seed fill out the heart. Ambrette is a musky seed with a faintly pear-like, skin-warm smell, and cinnamon runs through it as a dry spice.

Vanilla absolute, benzoin and a leather note make up the base, rounding off the fruit and leaving a darker, sweeter trail.

Does Hibiscus Mahajad smell of mint?

Spearmint is one of the listed materials, and it shows mostly in the opening as a cool lift next to the fruit. It fades as the rose, cinnamon and vanilla take over.

Is it a sweet rose?

It starts tart rather than sugary, but vanilla and benzoin make the drydown noticeably sweet. Anyone after a dry rose may find the base too rich.
