Karagoz, inspired by Nishane Karagöz (2017)

Pineapple is the first thing you notice, but bouquet garni, the classic kitchen bundle of herbs, tempers it straight away with a savoury, green bite. Black grape adds a darker, winey fruitiness. Neroli and jasmine bring a floral middle, with patchouli already pulling it towards the earth. Vetiver, agarwood and amber close it on a dry, woody note.

About the original

Nishane launched Karagöz at Esxence 2017 as part of its Shadow Play trilogy of extraits de parfum, alongside Hacivat and Zenne. The name, meaning 'black eye', comes from a lead character in traditional Turkish shadow theatre, and the brand frames the scent as a tribute to a playful, witty and sincere figure. Jorge Lee is credited as perfumer, with creative directors Mert Güzel and Murat Katran as co-noses. Its trilogy partner Hacivat is a separate, much more widely known pineapple-woody scent.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Nishane stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

People drawn to fruity scents that are not candy-sweet will find it interesting. The herbs and agarwood give it an offbeat, slightly savoury character. That savoury edge may also put off a buyer who wants a polished, clean pineapple.

Is Karagöz the same as Hacivat?

No. Both belong to Nishane's Shadow Play trilogy and both feature pineapple, but they are different perfumes. We also make a version inspired by Hacivat.

A bundle of culinary herbs. In Karagöz it gives the pineapple a green, savoury edge.
