The Night, inspired by Frédéric Malle The Night (2014)

Oud dominates from the first breath: smoky, animalic and slightly barnyard-like, the way natural agarwood can be. Saffron and rose sit on top of it rather than softening it, adding a spiced, faintly jammy colour. As it settles, frankincense brings a dry, churchy smoke and sandalwood gives the base some smoothness. Little about it is sweet or polite.

About the original

Dominique Ropion composed The Night, launched in October 2014 in Dubai through Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdale's. Frédéric Malle describes its dose of natural oud as unprecedented, and the scent opened the Desert Gems collection. It later joined the brand's US and EU ranges. The Moon (2019) is a separate, fruitier volume of the same collection.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Frédéric Malle stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Experienced oud wearers are the audience the brand had in mind. Newcomers to oud may find the animalic, smoky character confronting, especially in the first stage.

Saffron and rose open it, but oud is already prominent underneath, leathery and medicinal.

Through the middle the oud is at its fullest, with rose giving it a dark floral edge.

Frankincense and sandalwood close it out, drier and calmer than the start.

Which is the oud-heavy one, The Night or The Moon?

The Night. It was built around a very high dose of natural oud, while The Moon leans on red fruit and amber with oud in the base.

Is The Night animalic?

Yes, the natural oud gives it a smoky, animal quality that is part of its character rather than a side note.
