Perles De Lalique, inspired by Lalique Perles de Lalique (2006)

Pepper arrives first, a dry, emphatic spice laid over Bulgarian rose. Orris, the iris root used in perfumery for its powdery, slightly earthy smell, gives the flower a cool texture. Patchouli comes through clearly in the heart and gives the scent its chypre structure. As it settles, the woods smooth out and the rose turns darker and quieter on the skin.

About the original

Nathalie Lorson composed Perles de Lalique, launched in 2006 and presented as a modern take on the chypre. Lalique still describes it as a chypre eau de parfum built on Bulgarian rose, Bourbon pepper and patchouli. An extrait version came in a numbered opal crystal bottle inspired by René Lalique's 1928 'Cactus' powder box. Some fragrance references add oakmoss, vetiver and musks to the base, though Lalique's own note list does not include them.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Lalique stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Dry and woody rather than sweet, this is a rose for wearers who like structure. The drydown has a slightly androgynous quality, so it suits women who do not want an overtly pretty rose. Its peppery, patchouli-heavy start can seem austere next to fruity florals.

Black pepper and Bulgarian rose open together, spicy and slightly sharp, with orris adding a powdery coolness.

Patchouli leaves move into the centre, earthy and a little woody, and the rose darkens around them.

Cashmere wood and tonka bean finish it, smooth and lightly musky, close to the skin.

Is Perles de Lalique a sweet rose?

No. Pepper, orris and patchouli keep it dry, and tonka only adds a little roundness at the end.

The eau de parfum. The extrait is a more concentrated version presented in a numbered opal crystal bottle.
